Back in 2011, I wrote about my mother, Mi Madre, My Queen and everything I wrote still holds true today, even more so. In the past decade, she has had two very bad falls resulting in surgeries and rehab and yet, she powered through with a determination and intensity that inspired not just her children but others. And while she has slowed a step and her mobility is not what it used to be, she is still the woman I aspire to be.
This morning, I heard a song by Anne-Marie titled Her. I stood in the kitchen in silence listening to the words that I could’ve written myself for my own mother and realized that daughters and sons all over the world were thinking the same thing. On this day we celebrate them – the women who gave us life and love – but honestly, they should be celebrated every day, every moment for as long as they walk this journey with us and even when the day comes when they can no longer physically hold our hands but instead wrap us in their angel’s wings.
Happy Mother’s Day, mom.
I’d tell you I love you a million times
Say that I’m sorry if I made you cry
Could never be half the woman even if I tried
But I’ll try, I swear I’ll try
If someone puts me down, yeah I know my worth
All thanks to you, the lessons that I’ve learned
If I had to put it into words
I think of an angel and all I see is her – all I see is her –
